Gospel Centrality and Global Missions

As pastors, we have a unique calling and responsibility to see that our people know the whole counsel of God which includes his global plan to redeem people from every tribe, nation, and tongue through the faithful and intentional witness of his people. The purpose of this paper is to challenge and encourage us as pastors who consider their ministries and churches to be “gospel-centered”—that is, pastors characterized by a high view of the gospel and the desire to not only proclaim the gospel to unbelievers, but also apply the gospel to believers—that gospel centrality necessarily keeps the nations in focus. We ought to be gospel centered churches who love not only the content of the gospel, but also the scope of the gospel (the nations) as well as the messengers of the gospel (missionaries). To do this, I will offer a brief biblical theology of mission as a means of highlighting the global focus of the gospel. Further I will examine a few New Testament texts that demonstrate the church’s call to send and care for those who go to the nations with the gospel. But first, we will look at the important words of the newly resurrected Christ to his disciples concerning the global plan of redemptive history as revealed in Scripture.
